END.
It seems that each month the comic takes a little longer than I anticipated. I guess ultimately that’s a good thing as I’m trying to keep the quality high. This month, however, I had started on a new comic for July. Did the research, wrote a rough script, and started laying it out into a storyboard … then I read about this Red Rocks sighting. I immediately thought it would make a good comic for here. A well-documented sighting with many witnesses. I also really enjoy the comics of Pan Cooke on Instagram, where he deals with current social issues through comics. A kind of comic journalism. I put the other comic on the shelve and got to work on this one.
I reached out to Michael to see if he would be into me making a comic about his experience, and lucky for me he was onboard. Michael had answered a whole bunch of questions in this thread and others on Reddit. I had a dearth of information to go on. Add to this a few back-and-forth emails with Michael to check some details. My main concern was getting the craft right. It took a few tries with Michael’s main feedback being, "make it blacker!" I feel I got the craft almost invisible in the comic, but I needed some contrast as well to define the shape. Here’s part of Michael’s description of the craft,
The craft itself was so dark black that we wouldn’t have noticed it if it didn’t have its lights on. It blended in very well with the night sky. It didn’t shine, it was as if it wicked in all light around it. Someone on Reddit told me to look up “vantablack” and that’s what it was like. The lights around the middle of it informed the overall shape. They lit up the craft, sort of how a lot up window on a house will light up the outside of the house a small amount.
In terms of the location, Michael helped me with some links to Google Maps. Michael, his coworkers, and what they are wearing are not accurate, i.e., I made them up to the best of my ability. Michael has indicated that he has continued speaking out sitting and connecting with others that can help him make sense of what they saw.
Red Rocks apparently has a history of sightings. I was focused on researching this comic and didn’t get too far into researching past sightings. I did find that the band that played that night ‘All Time Low’ had past posters that advertised gigs with heavy UFO imagery! Here are a few examples.
See you next this month…
