Welcome to the inaugural post for The Cosmic Gutter. To launch this publication, I chose my comic overview of David Grusch coming out as a whistleblower. This is my first ever comic on the UFO topic. I’ve been interested in UFOs for several years and dreamed of making comic adaption of famous encounters and non-fiction comics on the topic.
For this comic, the most difficult part was getting the research right as I don’t want to be spreading false information. The second most difficult part is that the story itself was updating quite rapidly while I was writing it. The first half initially appeared on my Instagram account here.
It’s rumoured that Grusch has an op ed that will be publishing in the coming months, although it’s being held up for review. There will need to be a part two once it drops. Now we all patiently wait…
Thanks for reading.

Behind the scenes extras...
This is an example of the first sketch I do for a comic page. It looks cleaner than it is as I use the eraser to here and there, but it has the elements of the finished page.
Above is an example of reference material I use. Sometime I might trace to get an idea of composition but then redraw it in my own style.
Here’s another example of the sketch for a page. The black line art if the first draft and the lighter grey is the second pass before I move on to the final linework.
And finally, here are two panels that didn’t make the cut. This is the second sketch stage before the final line art and colour is applied. I have been debating of how much to put myself in these comics. I felt these didn’t fit the flow of the comic. But I might use them down the track in another comic.
Really unique comic and behind the scenes process
This is fantastic. Love the Lue depiction.
